Crate Engine Buying Guide: What to Know Before You Order

Chevrolet 19331585 Engine - Commercial View

A crate engine is a complete, ready-to-install engine shipped in a crate. It is one of the fastest ways to add power to a project car, replace a tired engine or get on track in a racing class. Here’s what to check before you order.

1. Know what “complete” means for each engine

Crate engines are sold at different levels of completeness:

  • Short block – block, crankshaft, rods and pistons only
  • Long block – adds cylinder heads, camshaft and valvetrain
  • Turnkey / dressed – adds intake, carburetor or fuel injection, distributor or ignition, and often accessories

Read the product description carefully so you know which parts you still need to source.

2. Carbureted or EFI?

Carbureted engines are simple, affordable and easy to tune, which makes them popular for classic builds and racing. EFI engines offer easier cold starts, better drivability and improved fuel economy, but they need a compatible fuel system and wiring harness.

3. Street, strip or circle track?

Many racing classes require sealed engines such as the GM 602 and 604 circle track engines. These come sealed from the factory so that every competitor runs the same package, and opening the seals can make the engine illegal in its class. Always check your track’s rulebook before you buy. For street and strip builds, focus on horsepower, torque curve and the fuel octane the engine is built for.

4. Check fitment before you buy

  • Transmission: make sure the bellhousing pattern and flywheel or flexplate match your gearbox.
  • Motor mounts and headers: confirm they suit your chassis.
  • Fuel system: high-horsepower and EFI engines often need a higher-flow pump and lines.
  • Cooling: a bigger engine usually needs a bigger radiator.

5. Look for dyno testing

Dyno-tested engines have been run and verified before shipping, which gives you confidence in the advertised output and helps catch problems early.
